First News Release
A Taste of Big Bend Travelcade
The Fleetwood Travelcade Club 2008 Fall Rendezvous will be October 5-12, 2008 in San Antonio, Texas and we are planning a Travelcade out of there to the Big Bend Area. We do not have details yet as far as money, etc. but would love to have you come join us. This is a tentative schedule and things we are working on. The travelcade will last approximately 14 days.
We know the way, not to San Jose, but to the Big Bend Area since we have been there over a dozen times. Our Get Acquainted Meeting will be at same place as the Rendezvous. If you can't make the Rendezvous, you can join us in Del Rio. On our way to Del Rio we will stop in Uvalde to visit the First State Bank. Former Governor and Mrs. Dolph Briscoe left an extensive art and antique, plus Persian rug collection. The lobby furniture looks somewhat like a bordello.
We will spend two nights in Del Rio to visit Val Verde Winery, the oldest in TX, and the Whitehead Museum. There is an SAS Shoe factory if you missed the one in San Antonio. If you have a passport, you could go to Mexico. You would do that on your own, as we don't have a passport.
On our way to our one night stop in Sanderson, we will stop at the Pecos River Overlook, Seminole Canyon State Park, and Judge Roy Bean State Welcome Center with its large cacti display. We cross part of Big Bend National Park on our way to Study Butte (pronounced like stewdy butte) for a 5 night stay. There will be a drive to Presidio along the River Road. A stop at Ft. Leaton on our return as well as Lajitas, a town carved out of the desert. We will go to Santa Elaina Canyon and Castalon. You have to take off your shoes and wade Terlingua Creek to walk into the Canyon. The Chisos Basin where Harry will take the hikers on Lost Mine Trail and the rest of us can go up later to experience the High Country. You can either take a sack lunch or eat at the Hotel in the Basin. One day we will go to Boquillos Canyon, Rio Grande Village and Hot Springs.
The move to Ft. Davis isn't a long one. Prude Ranch will be our home for the last 4 nights of our trip. Prude Ranch is a working resort ranch. The Chihuahuan Desert Research Center and Fort Davis will be one morning and afternoon, but that night will be the mystery night. We will drive to Marfa to hopefully see the Marfa Lights. They have never been explained. We can't promise they will be active that night so keep your fingers crossed. Nice drive anyway with Prong Horns to see. The next day will be taken up with the Observatory. In the morning seeing the large telescope with an explanation of its workings and evening a Star Party. You actually look through about 4 smaller telescopes plus the ranger will show you stars with a laser beam.
Our Farewell Dinner will be at the Ranch and that will be our taste of the Big Bend Area. We will have other goodies to share as time goes on. This trip won't be scouted until after Christmas or early January so details will be forthcoming after that.
